Machrie Moor, on the west side of Arran, is soaked through with archaeology going back 5,500 years.
A very obvious feature of the moor is the group of six stone circles set very close together.
Circle 2 was a ring of seven or eight stones, although only three now remain standing. The tallest is around 5.5 metres (18 feet) tall. One of the fallen stones was reused in the 1700s to make two millstones, although they were never removed to a mill and the incomplete millstones remain in situ. Two cists were found within the circle, one containing human bones and the other containing cremation remains.
