Welcome to the Ancient Scotland pages - a personal photographic view of some of the ancient sites of Scotland.
Use the links at the top of the page to find sites on a zoomable map of Scotland or see a list of all the ancient sites I have recorded. Or you can just see a list of the most recent additions.
I'm Martin McCarthy, a photographer based in Glasgow, Scotland. I've been taking photographs of Scotland's landscape - particularly ancient sites - since 1993. The Ancient Scotland website has been documenting those ancient sites since 1995 and is illustrated with thousands of my photos.
Before becoming a full-time photographer in 2007 I had my own computer consultancy business and I am the author of several technical journal articals and computing books.
All photographs, text and drawings on the Ancient Scotland website are copyright Martin McCarthy except where explicitly stated otherwise.
The pictures on this site date from 1993 through to the present. I like to think I'm a better photographer now than I was 30 years ago, so the quality can be a little variable; the better (in my opinion) pictures will be those in the last few years on the Latest Stuff page!
Many of my images are available to license through Getty Images or iStock. Where high-resolution images are available to buy, links are provided through to the relevant Getty Images or iStock page.
The Ancient Scotland pages don't carry adverts, and never have. Nor do I carry tracking cookies that sell your browsing information to Google or Facebook or any of the other on-line advertising companies. No contribution is required. If you want to, I'd be happy for you to buy me a coffee. I drink a lot of coffee! But please don't feel you have to.
