I had pretty low expectations for this site - a single standing stone amongst the rugby and football playing fields of Stirling University. It probably wasn't helped by my previous visit to a rather sad-looking repaired and re-erected stone elsewhere on the university campus. But I was being unreasonably negative. The stone is massive. There was a surprisingly good ambience (no doubt helped by the low midwinter sun and slightly misty air) and the Wallace Monument on the horizon to the south made a delightful visual echo.
The stone is over 2.5 metres tall, and slightly wider at the top than at the base. It's pretty much impossible to miss being in the midst of several playing fields. Indeed, it is very close to the touchline of one rugby pitch and I can only imagine what an unpleasant hazard it can be.
