Cup and Ring Marks

Cup and ring marked rocks can often be tricky to find. The first time I came to look for this decorated rock I parked near Loch Lomond and walked up the road to Garelochhead, found the wooded bank where I believed the rock to be, and started to search. It was probably a couple of hours before I got to the west end of the wood where there's a great big sign showing where the rock is. Sometimes you try harder than necessary!

The moss covered boulder has at least four rings (one incomplete) carved into the top surface and some possible cups on the sides. Other shallow designs may be hidden by the moss that mostly covers the rock.

Some of the carvings are unusually deep, especially considering how weathered the rock is, suggesting that they may have been 'enhanced' by more recent 'sculptors'.
